The twelve engravings, published by William Hincks in 1783 to illustrate the various stages in the preparation of linen from sowing the flax seed to the sale of the bleached cloth, are an excellent introduction to the industry. The Plates not only illustrate the methods of the time but also some of the earlier skills that they had replaced.
